On Wednesday, Sanna Marin and Markus Raikkonen, who has been her husband for three years, said on Instagram that they had filed for a divorce together.
"We're thankful for the 19 years we've spent together and for our beautiful daughter. We'll always be best friends," they each wrote in their own Instagram story.
Marin and Raikkonen have a 5-year-old daughter together. They both used to work at a venture capital company.
In 2020, when Marin was in office and dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, they got married.
In Finland's parliamentary election last month, Marin and her Social Democratic Party lost to the right-wing National Coalition Party and the nationalist Finns Party.
Marin, who was 37 when she became prime minister in 2019, was the world's youngest leader at the time. Her fans all over the world see her as a role model for young, progressive leaders, even though voters at home chose a new government.
Marin wrote on Instagram after her wedding to Raikkonen in August 2020, "We have lived our youth together, grown up together, and become parents to our sweet daughter together."
