Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had four hits on the day, including a significant home run in the ninth inning, while Tommy Henry pitched six strong innings.
The Diamondbacks defeated the Nationals 8-7 in a walk-off victory in the bottom of the ninth inning thanks to Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s game-tying home run and Pavin Smith's bases-loaded walk.
There had been many emotional ups and downs in the game before that. With a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 6-2 lead into the top of the ninth,
the Diamondbacks took control of a 2-2 game. However, that advantage was short-lived as relievers Andrew Chafin and Scott McGough had a disastrous ninth inning,
surrendering five runs to give the Nationals a 7-6 edge. Keibert Ruiz hit a lead-off home run off McGough to start the inning, and he then walked a batter with two outs.
Andrew Chafin, who had just completed his fifth save the night before, caught Torey Lovullo's attention.
Lovullo called Chafin's number for the sixteenth time in 33 games, and it finally caught up to him.
Lane Thomas launched a stunning two-run homer to give the Nationals the lead after Chafin gave up two base hits, including a two-run single.
